Topic:
Vulnerability Testing
with Metasploit
Vulnerability scans are a great way to find out what weaknesses might exist in your network. It is also important to verify any vulnerabilities that are found to weed out false positives. One tool that is very useful for vulnerability verification is Metasploit. This month we are going to look at ways to utilize Metasploit to verify possible vulnerabilities and aid system discovery. The session will start out with an overview of Metasploit, looking at how to use and navigate the msfconsole. We will go through hands on exercises of using Metasploit with Nmap and Nessus output to test for possible vulnerabilities. Once we have exploited a few systems we will look at post-exploitation techniques built into Metasploit to gather information about the systems and network. We will also take a look at the new Java based GUI that has recently been added to the Metasploit SVN.
This will be an interactive session, feel free to bring a laptop and join in the beating that the lab machines will be receiving. An isolated lab environment will be available with vulnerable systems for testing and demoing Metasploit. We will be using the Backtrack 4 R1 distro for this session. You can download a prebuilt VM or Live ISO from: http://www.backtrack-linux.org/downloads/
